Newbie here, that just got a 4200 hst compact with my house purchase. Tractor ran a few times and then just up and died. Could never get it to restart. Began all the internet research and boiled it down to either the thermistor or the fuel shutoff solenoid. Well, it appears to be neither of those.

First I changed the thermistor and still would not start, and by start I mean get fuel. So I pulled the solenoid and tried turning it over, and the plunger would not come in. However, when I put some jumper wires on the solenoid and gave it 12v directly it pulled back the plunger, so the solenoid is still operational.

When I put a multi-meter in the fuel solenoid harness and turn ignition, I get no voltage reading. I get no voltage reading at the thermistor either. I'm sure the old thermistor wasn't even bad, I can still run current across it.

So I have something wrong upstream of those. I tried swapping around the Siemens relays to see if one of them was bad, still nothing.

The tractor starts and runs now that I've pulled the shutoff solenoid, but as you'd figure, it won't shut off unless I stick my finger in the pump and push the fuel inlet closed. Probably not a good idea to operate the tractor like that. So I'm looking for any ideas as to why I'm not getting voltage to the thermistor and then downstream to the fuel shutoff solenoid. Thanks!

You've covered everything I could suggest already, other than getting the service manual to look at the wiring schematics to see what's before the relays and thermistor.

I just printed a copy of the technical manual and was looking at the wire schematic. It looks like it could be a safety switch. It also in the "theory of operation" that the fuel shutoff solenoid will only receive current, "provided that operating conditions are met...." I'm going to try some safety switches.

Can you post the electrical schematics, and we can help you narrow it down.

As posted the wiring diagram would be a big help if posted.

When you say will not start, do you mean turns over, but will not start, or will not turn over?

Some ideas:
Blown fuse,
Bad connector(s)
Broken/rodent chewed wire(s)
PTO is engaged
Bad Ignition switch

i have been dealing with the same issue with my 4200. well yesterday i found the problem, with mine anyway. i replaced the thermistor, still nothing. turned out the one of the relays in the fuse panel was not making a good connection. i turned the switch to the on position and just started wiggling each relay. and sure enough the fuel solenoid opened. it was the top right relay. it is the only one that is different. hopefully this is the issue with yours. good luck.

i told you wrong. it is the top center relay. i believe it is the diode block.

I had similar issue with my 2305. Was an $8 diode.
